THE SECOND SEX

I had the idea for this photo in the fall of 2009, but it took me until the fall of 2010 to find someone to agree to pose for it, here, the lovely Isabel. My aim was originally regarding a disconnectedness of the top side versus the bottom side, so to speak, and a sort of obliviousness to ones perceived sexuality. A pristine and wholesome young woman, who somehow has failed to notice that she wears nothing below the waist. But how could this be an empowering position to be in? The end result was far more subtle as the knowledge of her expression indicates something else. She may be beckoning, she may be aloof. You must study the portrait to see what is going on here. In any case, I want to find new ways of representing women, I am trying to discover what they are.
