The thing that thrills me about the work of Robert Mapplethorpe is the flawless way that he mixes high and low. He always approaches his subject with classical reverence, no matter what or who it is. When the contrast is most striking, for me the photograph is most interesting.

About a year and a half ago I had the pleasure of meeting with former W Magazine creative director, Dennis Freedman. I found him to be insightful, smart and so passionate about art and photography. My meeting felt more like consulting an oracle, I respected him so much. As he was critiquing my work he said something along the lines of, "its clear where you're coming from, your influences, Paul Outerbridge, etc." But I had never heard of Paul Outerbridge at the time. When I went home I looked him up and bought 2 of his books. I realized to my amazement, that I had had an image of his ripped from a magazine on my wall all through high school. The nude with Freddy Krueger hands. Even way back then I was interested in leather and lace, so to speak. Dennis Freedman definitely knows his stuff.
